Wulfgar stood on the top of the unusually large Pyramid, one of a pair that dominated this battlefield, and stared out over the carnage below. He watched the pitiful remnants of his once mighty army picking over the corpses of their Dwarf foes. This last battle had been tough but this time the Varangur were left in possession of the battlefield and so some loot would be gained from this fight. Wulfgar would need to travel back North in order to fill the gaps in his ranks, he looked over to where he could see the mighty corpse of his Chimera mount slumped on a pile of dead Shieldbreakers, it had gone down fighting and Wulfgar had walked from the carnage untouched, luckily there will be plenty of spare horses as the Sons of Korgaan had suffered many losses too.
His warriors had fought hard and they had fought well but the Gods had not favoured them, perhaps they needed to bring more religious iconography to the battlefield, like the Lizards had done, having a giant icon of their tentacled Deity on the battlefield for all to see and they had shattered Wulfgar’s army to the four winds and beyond.
So what now? Wulfgar sighed as he contemplated the future, the Varangur were no longer needed to “Make Rhordia Great” as somehow the effete Rhordians had managed to do that themselves while the Mighty Varangur floundered. Perhaps Wulfgar should hire some of the Rhordians for his army, hmmmm one of those thunder guns and some of their Pikemen might help, but they would probably cost most of the poor pickings the Wulfen had collected on this trip. Perhaps he should take up his Brother Sigurd’s offer of joining him, but Sigurd was a Cursed Son and did have a habit of eating the furniture in one of his fits and it was embarrassing to have to chain him down when there was company. Since their sojourn to the southlands there had been little in the way of reinforcements available and all Wulfgar had to replace his losses with was a Snow Troll and his Wolfpack that had wandered into their camp after the battle saying that Bjorn had invited them, as half the army was called Bjorn and half of those were dead no-one really knew who had invited the Troll and his Wolves but Wulfgar was happy they had. They would start a slow return North but first Wulfgar had heard some interesting rumours about a Town “on the way” home that had some sort of Undead Problem and, more importantly, had a lot of loot that the Varangur could pick up. Hopefully it wouldn’t be as difficult a raid as this one had been, Wulfgar sighed again, hoisted his axe onto his shoulder and headed down the pyramid to give his lads the good news.
The TT Tournament that Wulfgar and his ruffians are planning to attend is the fifth such event run by the irrepressible Andy “Zombie Master” Hawley in Sheffield. They always have an undead theme and this one is no exception being subtitled “Grabbed by the Ghoulies” It is a One Day, three Game, 2300 point Tournament and usually attracts a good crowd. It is also an event I regularly provide a Spoon for.
After the Debacle at War of the Roses (WoTR) I wanted to make some more changes to the Wulfen, however as the closing date for list entries to TT was a week before the WoTR I had to use what I had and what I thought I could safely paint in the meantime and so the list was as below
For this event the addition of a Regiment of Tundra Wolves and a Snow Troll Prime as replacements for the Second Chimera Lord is the major change to the army, this gives a total of three cavalry regiments for Wulfgar to play with and an extra scoring Nimble character.
The Magus Conclave is still in the army and this is a chance for it to redeem itself in Wulfgar’s eyes as it is an expensive unit to field for little or no return.
The Sons of Korgaan remain the main fighting force of the Army with their Stealthy upgrade and retain the boots of Striding and the Blessing of the Gods, I mostly use them as a second line for Counterpunches after an enemy has taken out snow foxes or Night Raiders and I may continue this tactic for the time being.
Speaking of Night Raiders, they are still in the Army and have been upgraded to Scout and Vicious, hopefully I will get better at using these guys with practise but their lack of steady aim is still a minor inconvenience to say the least. Three Regiments are in use because that is the models I have to hand, but this may change as replacements come on line. I have plans to use 3D printed Barbarians based as troops to allow flexibility on how I can use them on the Table top and in Ambush Games as well.
I have retained the Thegns on Frostfang as they are painted and are useful units, I am still torn between these and Snow Troll primes and so this Tournament will be a good test of them side by side. The Snow trolls are slightly cheaper and have Regeneration and Wild Charge D3 but the Frostfangs have Strider and 15” charge anyway. Watch for the After Action Report for my thoughts and feels on the two options.
Magnilde (or Thrudella as she is known to the Wulfen) stays in as this is a utility piece par excellence! Although a bit expensive at 175 points she usually makes her points back in the games and Wulfgar relies on her abilities to help at critical junctures in the battles.
The Snow Foxes are having another outing, even with Stealthy they need to be protected until needed as I found at WoTR, having them waivered in front of the Striker units is no good and so I need to be mindful of when they pop out to block stuff.
Draugr, these guys stay in because I like the models I have and the fact that they are 75 points and unlock makes them a useful Chaff/Objective sitter/loot carrier unit and Wulfgar is considering having some more drafted into the Army for the new season.
The Lord on Chimera is in again as I still haven’t finished enough points to replace him entirely but may consider exchanging him for a Regiment of Huscarls in the future. Although this will cut down on the mobility of the army, I have found that piloting a large monster can use up a lot of my brain power during a game and there is not a lot of that to go round as it is. Also, the 320 points spent on the Chimera Lord puts pressure on him to “make back his points” by killing stuff and although he is good, he is not capable of killing things without support and that taxes the old Grey Cells beyond this Trolls capabilities as well. One of the Options in the Varangur List is to put a Lord on a Horse, this may be something I will be trialling at the club when I get into the swing of practise games. We do have some very good master’s level players at the Ribble Warriors and I am hoping to get gud by drawing on their experience (i.e. getting thrashed by them until I learn to play better)
